How Much Money can you make with Freelance
Writing?
By Jeremy Olson
Most people get
into writing because they enjoy it... or they at least enjoy
talking about their interests or hobbies. Even still, one of the
biggest questions many people have about freelance writing is
how much money is possible with it. After all, why not make some
money while doing something you like.
The truth is that
there is no easy answer for how much money an individual can
make with freelance writing. That's because there are several
factors you need to look at before being able to determine how
much cash you can potentially earn.
Time
One of the first
factors you need to look at is how much time you have to spare
each week writing. If you're a stay-at-home spouse who is
looking to make some extra money while focusing on the kids then
you probably won't have a ton of time to write. You might be
able to squeeze in two solid hours a day if this is the case
which will allow you to make some money.
On the other
hand, if you're going to treat writing as a full-time job then
you could possibly get eight hours a day or more in. With this
being the case, you could make a 6-figure income after
everything is said and done. Of course there are still some
other things to look at before deciding if this is a reality.
Speed
Another very
important thing you need to keep in mind when thinking about how
much money you can make with writing is how fast you can work.
Typing speed will certainly be critical here since your ability
to type fast helps get articles done faster. If you don't have a
clue as to how fast you type, there are plenty of typing tests
you can take over the Internet.
Besides typing
speed, you should also take into account how well you're able to
focus on something until the job is done. If you are a major
daydreamer then it's going to take you a lot longer to get an
article done than if you have the ability to sit down, and
hammer out an article without getting distracted. For those that
do fall into the daydreaming category, timing yourself can be an
effective means for getting work done faster and helping you
stay focused.
Interests
One thing I
always like to stress in regards to the money factor is what you
write about will play a part. For instance, if you only want to
write articles about repairing vintage bicycles then you're
going to have a tough time finding consistent work. However, if
you have a broad range of interests then it is going to be much
easier to land writing jobs.
I myself have
written about many subjects over the years, but I've narrowed
down my main interests to poker, video games, and bodybuilding.
I already have lots of samples in these interest areas, and it's
pretty easy for me to find new jobs whenever I need them. Of
course there are also times when I write about subjects outside
of these interest areas so always keep an open mind about
things.
Goals
Perhaps the most
important determinant in how much money you'll make with writing
is your own goals. After all, if you're not worried about making
a 6-figure income through freelance writing then it's probably
not going to happen. Likewise, if making over $100,000 a year
with writing is your main focus then you have a good chance of
accomplishing this goal.
Depending on how
much money you want to make in a year, you'll have to do what it
takes to get there. If you're happy making $40,000 a year then
you probably won't have to extend yourself too far once the
writing takes off. Those who want to make much, much more will
probably have to write for lots of websites and content
companies. Looking for magazine opportunities, copyrighting
work, etc. is also a good way to build extra income through
writing.
